Concussion Protocol
Coaches Steps to Follow:

  1. Immediate Action:

    • Remove the individual from play or activity immediately if a concussion is suspected.

    • Monitor the individual for signs and symptoms of a concussion, including but not limited to:

      • Headache

      • Dizziness

      • Nausea or vomiting

      • Confusion or memory loss

      • Sensitivity to light or noise

      • Loss of consciousness (even briefly).

  2. Notify and Document:

    • Inform the on-duty supervisor immediately.

    • Notify the individual’s parent/guardian (if applicable).

    • Complete an Incident Report Form with detailed observations and actions taken.

  3. Medical Evaluation:

    • Recommend that the individual seek medical evaluation as soon as possible.

    • If the individual is unconscious or showing severe symptoms, call emergency services (911).

  4. Return-to-Play Guidelines:

    • The individual must not return to play or activity on the same day as the suspected concussion.

    • Require written clearance from a licensed healthcare provider before allowing the individual to resume activities.

  5. Follow-Up:

    • Monitor the individual’s progress and ensure they follow a graduated return-to-play protocol as recommended by a healthcare professional.
